Preserving and Promoting Old-Time Fiddling in Northern New England
IMPORTANT: JANUARY 12 MEET IN MONTPELIER IS CANCELLED DUE TO EXTREME WEATHER EVENT.
The Northeast Fiddlers Association (NEFA) is excited to announce that a full scholarship for a 2020 week-long fiddle camp will be awarded to a Vermont fiddler for a camp of his or her choice. NEFA’s mission is “To preserve and promote the art of old time fiddling,” and that is also the mission of these summer camps for fiddlers of all ages: the Northeast Heritage Music Camp; The Maine Music Camp; Ashokan Fiddle and Dance; and the Acadia Trad School; and for younger fiddlers, the Young Traditions Vermont Trad Camp (ages 7 or 8 – early teens), Brattleboro Music Center Trad Camp (ages 9-14), and the Summit School Trad Camp (ages 8-16). These camps all offer a week of classes, lessons, workshops, jam sessions, with excellent and inspirational teachers. Two prizes will be awarded if more than 20 fiddlers apply.
An application form for the scholarship can be downloaded below, or may be picked up at one of the upcoming NEFA meets: Feb 2 at the VFW in Hyde Park, on March 8 at the Berlin Elementary School, or on April 5 at the VFW in Montpelier. An application fee of $15 gives the applicant a one-year membership in NEFA and a chance to win the scholarship. Each applicant is required to attend and to participate in at least one NEFA meet before the first of May, and to supply a letter of reference from a fiddle teacher or another musician. It is hoped that fiddlers of all ages and ability levels will apply.
NEFA meets are free and open to the public and always begin at noon with an hour-long circle jam, after which individual fiddlers go up to the stage and each play a few tunes. The meets are friendly, low key and always fun.
Applications can be mailed to Val Essex, Secretary, 111 Mountain St., Apt. A, Bristol, VT 05443, or brought to any of the fiddle meets.
Northeast Heritage Fiddle Camp, 2019
We are trying to reach as many fiddle teachers as we can to enlist their help in encouraging their pupils to apply. We hope that enough students will apply so that we can award one full tuition scholarship for an adult camp, and also a scholarship to a Trad Camp for younger students. A downloadable poster for your bulletin is below.
As part of the application process the student must attend and participate in one of our upcoming fiddle meets. These meets are very casual, and students of all ability levels will be warmly welcomed and encouraged. We appreciate any help you can give us in spreading the word, and would love to have you and your students show up at one of our meets!
