Preserving and Promoting Old-Time Fiddling in Northern New England
Throughout our history NEFA has offered scholarship aid to youngsters for music lessons and summer music camps. In 2020 we were very happy to award three full tuition scholarships: one for the Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camp; one for the Young Traditions Vermont Trad Camp; and one for the Summit School Trad Camp. It was very disappointing to all of us when all three of the camps had to be cancelled last summer. We were hopeful that our winners would be able to cash in their prizes when COVID-19 was more under control, but so far the camps continued to be postponed.
In the meantime, to the extent that our finances allow, NEFA will always be eager to encourage and support young people in developing their skills and discovering the joy that comes with making music.
Congratulations to a wonderful young fiddler, Rowan Landis-Marinello, who wowed us with her playing at our April meet at the Capital City Grange. NEFA is happy to be awarding her a full scholarship to the 2023 Vermont Folklife Summer Trad Camp.
Attending a Fiddle Meet
Under normal circumstances, applicants must attend and participate in one of our fiddle meets. These meets are casual, and students of all ability levels are warmly welcomed and encouraged.
Note to Fiddle Teachers
We hope you will encourage your students to apply to NEFA for scholarship aid, and we would be delighted to have you and your students show up at a NEFA meet anytime!

Northeast Heritage Fiddle Camp, 2019
We are trying to reach as many fiddle teachers as we can to enlist their help in encouraging their pupils to apply. We hope that enough students will apply so that we can award one full tuition scholarship for an adult camp, and also a scholarship to a Trad Camp for younger students. A downloadable poster for your bulletin is below.
As part of the application process the student must attend and participate in one of our upcoming fiddle meets. These meets are very casual, and students of all ability levels will be warmly welcomed and encouraged. We appreciate any help you can give us in spreading the word, and would love to have you and your students show up at one of our meets!
